Peace Be Upon You is a community-engaged theater-making project developed through a thoughtful and inclusive process of collaboration, interviews, and story circles with college students and members of the Willamette Valley community, particularly those of the Islamic faith. This initiative sought to amplify the voices and experiences of underrepresented groups, fostering dialogue and understanding through the medium of theater.
The play centers on the evolving relationship between Sumaiya, a devout Muslim student, and Chelsea, her non-Muslim college roommate, as they navigate life at a rural university in Oregon. Confronted with cultural and political challenges, the two must reconcile their differences and find common ground, reflecting broader societal tensions and the potential for mutual growth and understanding.
The development process emphasized community participation at every stage. Through interviews and story circles, participants shared their personal narratives, insights, and experiences, which informed the script and character development. This collaborative approach ensured that the play authentically represented the complexities of identity, faith, and cross-cultural interactions in a contemporary American context.
Special attention was given to creating a sensitive and accurate portrayal of Islamic faith and practices, guided by input from Muslim community members and cultural advisors. Workshops and discussions with students and local residents further enriched the narrative, embedding it with diverse perspectives that resonate with audiences.
The final production served not only as a compelling theatrical work but also as a platform for dialogue, inviting audiences to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of living in an increasingly diverse society. Peace Be Upon You exemplifies the power of theater to bridge divides, promote empathy, and celebrate the richness of human connection.
